Plea challenging UGC’s equity regulations filed in Supreme Court

New Delhi: A plea challenging the University Grants Commission (UGC)’s recently notified rules to prevent caste discrimination on campuses has been filed in the Supreme Court. The defense argues that the rules in question prevent ‘general category’ students from lodging complaints under the grievance redressal mechanism. The University Grants Commission (Promoting Equality in Higher Educational Institutions) Regulations, 2026 was notified earlier this month and is applicable to all higher education institutions in India.
