Sharad Pawar on Ajit Pawar’s Death

New Delhi: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday called for a Supreme Court-monitored inquiry into the death of NCP leader Ajit Pawar in a plane crash, claiming that all other institutions have been completely taken over, with many opposition leaders, including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, backing her demand. However, NCP (SP) chief and Ajit Pawar’s uncle Sharad Pawar said that the plane crash was an accident and should not be politicized.
The BJP criticized Banerjee’s remarks, saying she was involved in “petty politics” when she should have stood by the grieving family of the NCP leader.
Speaking in Kolkata, Banerjee emphasized that the truth will not come out through existing mechanisms and only an investigation under the supervision of the top court will be credible.
“We trust only the Supreme Court. All other institutions have been completely compromised,” he told reporters.
Banerjee hinted that Ajit Pawar was planning to return to the Nationalist Congress Party faction NCP (SP), stating that reports circulating in recent days pointed to such a move.
“I was truly shocked to see (the news of Ajit Pawar’s death) this morning. This shows that there is no safety or security in this country, even for political leaders,” the West Bengal CM said. he said.
“Today, even those who are part of the ruling establishment do not seem safe,” he said.
In his first reaction after his nephew Ajit Pawar and four others died in the plane crash, senior leader Sharad Pawar said, “There was a statement from Kolkata that politics was involved in this incident. But there is no such thing.”
“There is no politics in this. It was an accident. I request that no politics be involved in this,” he added.
However, Kharge supported Banerjee’s demand for an investigation.
When asked about Banerjee calling for a Supreme Court-monitored inquiry, Kharge said there should be an inquiry as it was an accident.
“Everyone, all leaders, continue to travel for urgent work. But in Ahmedabad, we have seen on many occasions how a large plane crashed. It was a small plane; why did this happen? It should be investigated. We also demand an investigation,” Kharge said.
Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha said that Ajit Pawar worked for the people and his untimely death caused sadness to everyone.
“This has hurt everyone, including their family members, and we share their pain and pray that they can bear this loss,” the Congress chief told reporters at the Parliament House complex.
Citing similar incidents in the past, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav said Banerjee’s demand was justified.
“He (Ajit Pawar) was a great leader, served as deputy chief minister many times and was a popular leader of Maharashtra. He (Banerjee) must have made a legitimate demand… Many VIPs had lost their lives in a similar manner before, so an impartial investigation should be done so that it can be known what was the cause of the accident,” Yadav said.
Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Anil Desai called Pawar’s death a huge loss for Maharashtra and called for a thorough investigation.
Desai said, “There needs to be an investigation because such incidents happen all the time. Everyone is wondering why…”
“On the one hand, the demand for rental planes has increased, private planes are increasing, but on the other hand, technical problems or other reasons arise after the accident, and this needs to be investigated in detail…” he said.
The BJP reacted strongly to Banerjee’s remarks, Biplab Deb, the BJP co-incharge of elections in West Bengal, told PTI Videos. “He has lost his humanity.”
Union Minister Ravneet Singh Bittu said it was unfortunate and unfair that “dirty politics” was being played while Pawar’s family and others associated with him were mourning.
“This is an extremely unfortunate situation. If someone else wants to do politics, let them do it, but politicians need to understand everything, they are aware of every fact,” he said.
Ajit Pawar (66) and four others died when the plane carrying them made a forced landing at Baramati airport.
Union Aviation Minister K Ram Mohan Naidu said that as per preliminary information, visibility was poor at the airport when the carrying plane crashed.
Naidu said, “DGCA (Directorate General of Civil Aviation) and AAIB (Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau) teams arrived to investigate the accident. Preliminary information shows that visibility was poor when the plane was landing.”
ATC Baramati said that when he asked the pilot whether the runway was visible, the answer was negative and the plane then went around.
The Minister said that during the second landing attempt, ATC asked again whether the runway was visible and the pilot responded positively.
Stating that the plane crashed after ATC gave permission to land, Naidu said, “We are looking for more details and will conduct the investigation in a transparent manner.”
A team from the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) reached the Baramati crash site to initiate a forensic investigation into the accident.
