‘Respect Canadian sovereignty’: Mark Carney reacts on secret US meeting with Canadian separatist group | World News

At a time when tensions between Ottawa and Washington are rising, senior Trump administration officials have reportedly been holding secret meetings with far-right Canadian separatists who want to break away from the rest of the country.

According to the Financial Times, US officials have met three times in Washington since last April with leaders of the Alberta Prosperity Project, a far-right separatist group advocating independence for the oil-rich western province.

Reports also suggest the separatist group plans to meet with US state and Treasury officials next month for a $500 billion loan facility to support the state if an as yet unscheduled independence referendum is passed.

The revelation of secret meetings comes at a time when tensions between the United States and Canada are rising. Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney warned of a ‘rupture’ in the global order, and these statements were interpreted as a veiled criticism of President Donald Trump’s trade and foreign policies, although he did not directly name him. According to the report, tense bilateral relations have strengthened the separatist movement, which is trying to take advantage of the increasing friction.

Mark Carney expresses concerns

Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed concern about the United States’ growing support for separatists in the country and called on the United States to respect Canada’s sovereignty.
“We expect the US administration to respect Canada’s sovereignty – I’ve always been clear with President Trump on that,” Carney said.

According to the BBC, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith also said she expects US officials to avoid delving into issues related to the province’s ‘democratic process’ and leave such discussions to Albertans and Canadians.

Some Canadian leaders, including British Columbia premier David Eby, called the separatists’ actions “treason.”

Canada is getting a taste of its own medicine

Canada, long accused by India of harboring Khalistani separatists who advocate establishing an independent Sikh state from Indian territory, now finds itself facing a similar challenge on its own soil. India has persistently protested Canada’s tolerance of Khalistani activities, including financing, propaganda and even violent conspiracies linked to extremists in the diaspora; Ottawa has often rejected or downplayed them under the pretext of freedom of expression.
Alberta’s resource-rich status, which mirrors Punjab’s historical woes, is fueling the movement. However, it still remains marginal due to limited public support.

This development prompted ironic comments on social media, framed as poetic justice or “Canada getting a taste of its own medicine”; Canada, long home to anti-India elements, has faced foreign interference in separatist ambitions. This demonstrates Canada’s hypocrisy for its perceived tolerance of separatist movements abroad while facing threats of internal disintegration in its resource-rich west.
