House Speaker Mike Johnson said Sunday he believes he has the votes needed to end the partial government shutdown by Tuesday as the House passes a Senate-approved spending package this week.

“Let’s just say I’m confident we’ll get this done at least by Tuesday,” the Louisiana Republican said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

The US government partially shut down Saturday morning after Congress failed to approve the spending package and send it to President Donald Trump by January 30.

Senate Democrats demanded changes to the package the House first passed after two US citizens were shot and killed by federal immigration agents in Minnesota. Democrats ultimately removed Department of Homeland Security funding from the package and replaced it with a two-week stopgap. Now, the amended package must be re-approved by Parliament.

Parliament will begin considering the bill on Monday. House Rules Committee It is planned to meet on Monday as the first step of this process.

Johnson said he was not counting on Democratic support to help expedite the measure under a “suspension of the rules” that requires a 2/3 majority in the House of Representatives.

“We’re having a logistical challenge getting everyone into the city, and from my conversation with him [Democratic Leader] Hakeem Jeffries, I know we need to make a rule and we’re mostly doing it on our own,” Johnson said.
