Search for man missing after swim at Maroubra Beach in Sydney’s east to resume

The search will continue for a man who failed to return to shore after swimming with friends at a popular beach in Sydney’s east.

Emergency services were called at around 4pm on Sunday after reports of a man swimming at the southern end of Maroubra Beach had not returned to shore.

Police said the man in his 30s was with several friends at the time.

Teams from Maritime Area Command, Surf Life Saving, Randwick Council, Toll and Westpac Helicopters searched for the man until 6pm before the search was suspended.

The search for the man will continue from 08:00 on Monday morning.

Marine Rescue NSW inspector Andrew Harding said conditions were “not suitable” on Sunday.

“Conditions are not good offshore this afternoon, with rough seas and showers of rain,” Mr Harding said.

“Volunteer crews on board Middle Harbor 30 and Botany Hacking 32 will continue the search this evening unless instructed otherwise by NSW Police Maritime Area Command.

“Marine Rescue NSW vessels and crews stand ready to assist should the search continue tomorrow.”
