Jos Buttler Makes History, Becomes Most Capped Player For England

Pallekele: England’s star batsman Jos Buttler became the fourth highest run-getter in the T20Is after the second Sri Lanka-England match of the three-match series on Sunday. The match also marked Buttler’s 402nd international appearance for England.
Buttler currently sits behind only Pakistan’s Babar Azam, India’s Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the list of most T20I runs scored. Buttler scored 39 runs from 29 balls for England as the Three Lions recorded a 6-wicket win over Sri Lanka and took an unassailable 2-0 lead. Buttler currently has 3925 runs in 146 T20I matches at an average of 35.36.
The wicketkeeper-batsman smashed a century and 28 half-centuries. He is currently the fourth highest T20I run-getter in the world. He is also England’s highest ever T20I run-getter. England’s next best is former England cricketer Eoin Morgan, who has scored 2458 runs in 115 T20Is. Morgan is 23rd on the all-time list of highest T20I run wins.
Babar Azam is the player who has scored the most T20I runs with 4505 runs in 139 matches, followed by Rohit Sharma who has scored 4231 runs in 159 T20Is. Virat Kohli ranks third with 4188 points in 125 matches. Notably, Rohit and Virat retired from T20Is and Tests.
Experienced wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler made history on Sunday as the most capped player for England in international cricket, having now played 402 matches for England.
The 35-year-old surpasses legendary seamer James Anderson, who made 401 international appearances for the Three Lions. Buttler scored 12,308 runs in 402 international matches for the Three Lions.
In Test cricket, Buttler scored 2907 runs in 57 matches and 100 innings at an average of 31.94. The right-hander has scored two centuries and 18 half-centuries in the longest format. In ODIs, Buttler scored 5,515 runs and 171 innings in 199 matches at an average of 39.11.
The 35-year-old player made 11 hundreds and 29 half-centuries. Two-time ICC Championship title winner Buttler is also a part of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, which starts on February 7 in India and Sri Lanka.
The Three Lions have announced their squad for the upcoming ICC tournament and star batsman Harry Brook has been appointed captain. The Three Lions will kick off their T20 World Cup 2026 campaign against Nepal on February 8.
