Mandelson-Epstein latest: Peer suggested JP Morgan ‘threaten’ UK over tax on banker bonuses, new files show

Could Lord Mandelson’s reign be annulled?

Although Lord Peter Mandelson resigned from the Labor Party on Sunday, his rank is unlikely to be revoked.

The former US ambassador became a Labor Party Member in 2008 but is currently on leave.

In light of new allegations that emerged over the weekend, there have been calls in recent days for him to be removed from the House of Lords altogether.

But doing so would require a complex process in which the government would have to propose and pass specific legislation to remove his nobility.

Early Education Minister Olivia Bailey said in a statement on Monday morning that she understood Lord Mandelson had no plans to return to the Lords at this time.

If he were to do this, he would have to give three months’ notice. When the next parliamentary session begins in May, he will have to decide whether to apply for another leave or return, or whether he can retire at any time.

Peer suggests JP Morgan should ‘mildly threaten’ UK chancellor over bank bonus taxes

The emails revealed that Lord Mandelson was trying to change government policy on a planned tax on bankers’ bonuses at Epstein’s demands.

At the time, he was business secretary in the government of Labor member Gordon Brown and former chancellor Alistair Darling was announcing a proposal for a “super tax” on bonuses over £25,000.

The additional 50 percent tax rate was implemented following the 2008 financial crisis.

In a December 15, 2009 email, Epstein wrote: “[A]“I have no chance of paying tax only on the cash portion of the banker’s bonus.”

Mandelson replied: “I’m trying to fix it, as I explained to Jes last night. It’s digging for treasure, but I’m ready.”

On December 17, Epstein emailed Mandelson asking if JPMorgan’s CEO Jamie Dimon “should call my girlfriend one more time.”

Mandelson replied: “Yes, and slightly threatening.”

Minister says Mandelson must answer for whether he correctly declared Epstein’s money

Communities Minister Steve Reed was asked whether Lord Mandelson should be demoted over his relationship with Epstein.

He told Sky News: “I think we need to understand exactly what happened before we take such action. You’re asking me here about something that happened nearly 20 years ago. I don’t know all the details of it, I wasn’t in government 20 years ago.”

“I don’t know whether he declared that, and he should have – the declaration rules had been introduced by then – so it will be for Peter Mandelson to explain whether the money was declared correctly, and if it wasn’t then he will have to account for that.

“But I don’t want to rush in and make assumptions. I think we need to find out exactly what happened first.”

Minister: ‘I’m glad Peter Mandelson is no longer a member of the Labor Party’

A government minister said he was “delighted” Lord Peter Mandelson was no longer in Labor; that minister resigned his membership after a weekend in which his connections to Jeffrey Epstein were revealed.

Early education minister Olivia Bailey said she was pleased to see Lord Mandelson leave the party but denied the prime minister knew the extent of his ties to Epstein when he appointed him as US ambassador.

“Categorically, the information we have from the documents this weekend, namely the documents in the autumn, was not available to the prime minister before the decision was made to appoint Peter Mandelson,” he told Sky News.

“And as soon as the information became clear, the prime minister, rightly, moved quickly to dismiss Peter Mandelson as US ambassador.

“And I’m glad Peter Mandelson is no longer a member of the Labor Party.”

Conservatives call for investigation into Mandelson’s appointment as US ambassador

The Conservatives have called for a “full and detailed independent investigation” into Lord Mandelson’s appointment as US ambassador following his resignation from the Labor Party.

A Conservative Party spokesman said: “Lord Mandelson was completely disgraced. But Keir Starmer lacked the backbone to act and allowed Mandelson to resign from the Labor Party rather than fire him.”

“Keir Starmer and his chief of staff appointed Mandelson as ambassador despite his relationship with Epstein and then refused to act even as the mountain of evidence against him grew.

“Given the Prime Minister’s appalling lack of judgment and involvement in the Downing Street operation, a full and detailed independent investigation is now required.”

Starmer says ‘anyone with information’ should testify

Sir Keir Starmer suggested on Sunday that Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, who appears several times in recent documents, should answer questions from the US Congress.

Both Andrew and Lord Mandelson face increasing pressure from Washington MPs to provide evidence about the late pedophile financier.

Labor colleague has ‘questions to answer’ over Epstein links

A government minister said Lord Mandelson had “questions to answer” about his links to pedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein and refused to say he was happy for him to remain in Parliament.

Education minister Olivia Bailey told Times Radio she was “delighted” to see Lord Mandelson resign from the Labor Party.

“Peter Mandelson clearly had questions to answer. He made that decision, it’s the right decision,” he said.

But when asked whether he would remain a member of the House of Lords, he said: “The fact of the removal is a complicated situation. I believe you must have been sent to prison for more than 12 months or an Act of Parliament would have to be passed.”

“It is true that he is not a member of the party. He does not currently sit in the House of Lords.”

Mandelson: ‘I don’t want to embarrass Labor any further’

Lord Mandelson said he wrote to Labor Party general secretary Hollie Ridley on Sunday evening informing her that she was resigning from the party.

In his letter, he said: “This weekend I became even more involved in the understandable anger surrounding Jeffrey Epstein, and I am remorseful and sorry about that.

“Allegations that he made financial payments to me 20 years ago, which I believe to be false and of which I have no record or recollection, need to be investigated by me.

“I do not wish to cause further embarrassment to the Labor Party by doing this and that is why I am resigning from the party.”

Lord Mandelson said: “I would like to take this opportunity to reiterate my apologies to women and girls whose voices should have been heard long ago.

“I have dedicated my life to the values and success of the Labor Party and believe that I acted in its best interests when making my decision.”
