When a train derailed in Russia, a fireball rose 300 meters into the air. Smoke rose in the Tambov region of the country following an explosion suspected to have occurred as a result of sabotage on a train carrying supplies for Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war against Ukraine.
It was said that approximately 30 train wagons were damaged in the explosion that occurred on the railway tracks at the Kochetovka-2 station, which is believed to be the stop of goods transported to the south of Russia to provide materials for Putin’s illegal war. In photos and videos of the derailment, a column of thick, black smoke could be seen rising from the carriage.
An investigation has been launched into the cause of the incident, which caused train delays but did not cause any loss of life. Sun reported.
Although it is unclear what caused the explosion, Ukraine has targeted Russia’s train network before, including in 2023 when Ukrainians bombed the country’s longest railway tunnel.
Reports of the derailment come as Russian missiles and drones continue to hit Ukraine’s energy grid.
Kiev accused Moscow of illegally targeting electricity infrastructure to deny Ukrainians light, heat and running water.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Tuesday: “Taking advantage of the coldest days of winter to terrorize people is more important for Russia than diplomacy.”
His comment came on the eve of talks in Abu Dhabi between the US, Ukraine and Russia on ending the war, and as temperatures dropped to -20C in some parts of Ukraine.
The Russian military has repeatedly insisted that it targets energy facilities and other infrastructure that support Ukraine’s military industries and armed forces. He denied targeting residential areas despite evidence to the contrary.
Russia used cluster munitions in an attack on a crowded market in eastern Ukraine on Wednesday, according to Ukrainian officials; Seven people died and 15 people were injured in this attack.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the US President Donald Trump Moscow’s resumption of attacks “unfortunately did not come as a surprise.”
Mr. Zelensky said more than 200 repair crews were working to restore electricity in Kiev.
Envoys from Russia and Ukraine in the United Arab Emirates on Wednesday were joined by US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, the US president’s son-in-law, according to chief Ukrainian negotiator Rustam Umerov.
