Earlier this week EastEnders fans feared beloved Nigel Bates had died after he appeared to drown in a bath amid a heartbreaking battle with dementia.
The character, played by Paul Bradley, was a 1990s favorite of the BBC soap and returns to Albert Square in 2024.
Viewers watched Nigel deteriorate with dementia, being cared for by his wife Julie (Karen Henthorn) and old friend Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden).
But after Wednesday’s episode on BBC iPlayer, fans fear Nigel’s days may already be numbered.
When left unattended while bathing, he fell asleep and slipped under the water; which left viewers concerned that Nigel was drowning.
One viewer wrote: ‘Hope Nigel is okay after tonight’s Duff Duff. ‘We can’t lose him yet and his scenes tomorrow are embargoed.’
Actor Joshua Vaughan has been cast as Jasmine’s twin brother and is expected to appear in the role in the coming months.
Just before Christmas 2025, viewers admitted they were left a “sobbing mess” after a special episode focused on Nigel’s dementia.
Having overheard Phil and Julie’s conversation that they were considering moving him to a care home, a distressed Nigel went to the Queen Vic and viewers saw him hallucinate recent figures from his past.
These included Pat, which saw star Pam St Clement reprise her role 13 years after her character’s death, and Barry, which saw Shaun Williamson return after a 21-year absence.
As Nigel became increasingly confused, he also saw visions of his late wife Debbie Bates and younger incarnations of both Phil and his brother Grant Mitchell.
When Phil realized his friend was so upset he finally realized he couldn’t care for him anymore and in heartbreaking scenes Nigel told his friend it was ‘time to let him go’.
The special was praised by many viewers for its sensitive handling of Nigel’s struggle with dementia; Others were excited to see Barry and Pat back on screen after such a long time.
EastEnders airs on BBC One and is available to watch on iPlayer.
