The 2026 Winter Olympics will kick off with a glitzy opening ceremony featuring star-studded performances, stunning visuals and all the glitz expected from sport’s biggest winter stage.
The ceremony, which features more than 1,300 artists, including 1,200 volunteers from 27 countries, has taken months to prepare and a host of global music stars will take to the stage at the 76,000-capacity San Siro stadium.
Music will play a central role in the ceremony, with organizers aiming to showcase Italian culture while adding a modern flair to the show.
Mariah Carey is among the headliners to hit the stage, although not in the way audiences expected.
Organizers said the US superstar made the “brave” decision to sing a “very well-known song” in its original Italian.
Legendary Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli will also perform at the ceremony.
‘Singing at the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games is a great honor and a deeply emotional experience,’ he said.
Dozens of heads of state and government, including US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, are expected to attend the stands.

The event will kick off at 20:00 local time (19:00 GMT) at San Siro, the iconic 75,000-seat stadium that hosts football giants AC Milan and Inter Milan.
The opening ceremony is expected to be the last major event held at the decrepit venue, which was built nearly a century ago and is scheduled to be renovated in the coming years.
Unlike previous Games, the opening celebration will be held in multiple locations, with Milan hosting the main event.
Satellite celebrations, including athlete parades, will also take place in Predazzo, Livigno and Cortina d’Ampezzo, giving athletes and spectators outside Milan the chance to share the moment.
There is about a five-hour difference between the games’ co-hosts Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo.
