Man arrested after fatal party stabbing in Melbourne’s west
Updated ,first published
A man in his 60s has died and another has been arrested following a stabbing at a house in Melbourne’s west in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Emergency services were called to the property in Jackman Court, Wyndham Vale, at around 3.15am following reports of a knife attack.
Some neighbors said they heard loud music from a house along the street late Saturday night and were later awakened by the lights of an emergency vehicle outside their window.
One party attendee, who wished to remain anonymous, told Nine News that a small group of friends had gathered at home to drink beer and listen to music when “things got crazy”.
The man who left the party before the stabbing said that there was an argument between two people and “one of them got angry, went and took the knife and stabbed the victim.”
“What happened shouldn’t have happened,” he said. “Terrible.”
Police said first responders found a man with serious injuries. The person, whose identity has not yet been officially determined, died at the scene.
Officers arrested a 39-year-old man from Wyndham Vale who is believed to be known to the victim. The man was taken into custody for questioning by detectives, but no charges had been filed as of Sunday afternoon.
“The crime scene has been identified and the investigation continues,” police said.
Part of the small suburban street remained closed Sunday morning as police officers photographed the scene and collected evidence.
A portion of the facility’s driveway was covered with a SES tent.
Local resident Barry Hassell said the incident was shocking.
“There’s a lot of movement up and down here, so I’m always quick to look at the blinds and stuff. I wasn’t expecting that,” Hassell said.
“It feels a bit surreal to be honest. I never expected it to be this close to my home.”
Dad-of-two Hassell said the street was generally peaceful compared to other parts of Wyndham Vale further south.
“I’ve never seen anything like this before. The most we encounter is some burnouts along the way.”
Resident Vicki Presser said Jackman Court was “the quietest street in the suburb.”
“I think it’s probably time for more efforts to stop this type of crime,” Presser said.
