Lloyds and Natwest are two of the UK’s most popular banks but many branches will close in 2026. Lloyds banking group is closing a further 23 branches across the UK this year, following the complete closure of 17 branches in January. NatWest is preparing to close a further 32 branches across the country, with closures occurring throughout the year.

The bank said it was “difficult” to decide. Alongside its apps, Lloyds Banking Group said customers can continue to do their daily banking at Lloyds, Halifax or Bank of Scotland branches, as well as 11,000 Post Office branches or banking centres, and can also use telephone banking.

NatWest is set to close four branches in London, two in Manchester and several branches across the rest of the UK. Anyone who banks with NatWest and is affected by a local closure will receive information from the post about next steps.

The bank said £4 million had been allocated to branch investments in affected areas, while mobile branches and cash machines were still available across the UK. According to the bank, layoffs are also expected to be minimized.

A NatWest spokesman said: “Our branch network is a central part of how we serve our customers and we continue to invest in it for the future, with plans to increase our investment in branches over the next three years.

“But how our customers choose to bank with us is changing and our network and services need to reflect customer demand and ensure we are ready to offer the best possible support.

“Through our unique mobile branches, Community Banking Centres, Post Office partnerships and the largest fee-free ATM network of any bank, we are committed to providing our customers with access to banking that best suits their needs.

“We carefully consider where and when we make the difficult decision to close a branch to minimize the impact any changes may have on our customers and colleagues.”

A spokesperson for Lloyds Banking Group said: “The way people bank has changed, with more than 21 million customers choosing our apps to manage their money.

“By bringing the best of digital convenience to our employees, we offer more options than ever before.

“As well as our app, our customers can use any Lloyds, Halifax or Bank of Scotland branch, Post Office or banking center for day-to-day banking and deposit cash at over 30,000 PayPoint locations.”
