Stock Market LIVE: GIFT Nifty hints at positive start amid mixed cues; Asian markets extend gains | Markets News

GIFT Nifty was trading at 26,050.5 around 6:50 am, up 89 points or 0.34 percent. As part of MSCI’s February 2026 index review, Aditya Birla Capital and L&T Finance were added to the MSCI Global Standard Index. IRCTC is the only Indian stock excluded from the index. AU Small Finance Bank will see an increase in weight in the index due to volatility adjustment. Following this change, India’s weight in the MSCI Standard Index remained unchanged at 14.1 percent. The number of Indian companies in the index will increase from 164 to 165.
Asian markets opened higher and continued to rise despite artificial intelligence concerns and weak economic data weighing on Wall Street sentiment. At last check, Japan’s Nikkei 225 index rose 2.28 percent, Australia’s S&P/AXS 200 index rose 1.21 percent and South Korea’s KOSPI index rose 0.04 percent.
In U.S. markets, the S&P 500 and Nasdaq closed lower on Tuesday, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose to its third straight record close as investors digested weak retail sales data and awaited a key labor market report. December’s U.S. retail sales report showed consumer spending was unchanged, falling short of economists’ expectations for a 0.4% monthly increase, according to a Dow Jones survey. S&P 500 index increased by 0.33 percent, Nasdaq Composite increased by 0.59 percent and Dow Jones Industrial Average increased by 0.10 percent.
