WA Health says undetected measles cases a possibility after locally acquired case confirmed

Health officials believe that there are cases of measles that have not been identified in WA after confirming a locally acquired case.

Wa Health released a public health warning on Friday evening, which lists the exposure areas in Perth and Pilbara.

The infectious person traveled between Perth and Newman and visited various places between 1-7 July, including a Scarborough gym and Perth Airport.

Paul Armstrong, Director of Control of Diseases, said, “The latest case has recently had no inter -state or overseas travel history or known patient contacts, which shows that there are cases of measles that have not been identified in WA.

“Measles can spread very quickly and everyone who is not immune is at the risk of developing the disease if exposed.”

Dr Armstrong called on the WA community to be particularly awake with more people traveling during school holiday.

Measles are an extremely contagious virus that can spread through droplets in the air. It usually develops 10 days after exposure, but can take seven to 18 days.

Symptoms contain fever, fatigue, cough, nose and painful eyes, which includes rash without a red storm after three or four days. The rash usually begins on its face and spreads to the rest of the body.

It is recommended that everyone who is already immune to the measles visiting a region on the following dates should follow the symptoms up to 18 days from possible exposure.

It brings WA’s total case burden to 21 for the year.

People who have two doses of measles vaccination and born before 1966 are considered immune to measles.

Anyone who is worried that they may be the measles of themselves or their loved ones should seek medical care and call in advance to prevent the chance to spread the infection.
