The Congress continued its electoral winning streak in Telangana for the fourth consecutive year in the last two years, consolidating its growing political dominance since wresting power from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) in the 2023 Assembly elections.

The recent victory in the municipal elections adds to their success in the Assembly, Parliament and Panchayat elections, apart from two by-poll victories in constituencies that fell vacant following the untimely termination of BRS MLAs.

From the Assembly elections to the Lok Sabha polls, then the Panchayat elections and now the urban local body verdict, the Congress has steadily consolidated its position in rural and urban Telangana.

While the party failed to make a breakthrough on the scale achieved by the BRS in the 2020 municipal elections where the then ruling party won over 90% of the seats, the current result holds greater significance as the Congress has to take on two strong Opposition forces – the BRS and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Party leaders believe the Congress, which has won 65 per cent to 70 per cent of the seats, will not become complacent and the presence of strong Opposition parties will act as a constant reality check, preventing the organizational lethargy that often follows landslide victories.

The victory did not come easily, but it was the result of a disciplined electoral strategy combined with a visible delivery of governance. The decision is widely interpreted as an endorsement of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s administrative approach and also a signal of renewed unity within the Congress.

Although Mr. Revanth Reddy led the campaign by setting the overall narrative in public meetings held days before the election, what was decisive was the decentralized approach that laid out clear responsibilities while giving considerable autonomy to ministers and MPs.

The Prime Minister is known to have deftly deflected his campaign narratives, preventing the Opposition from cornering the party on sensitive urban administrative issues. By redirecting the discourse towards broader political themes, it enabled the Opposition to move away from raising questions that might resonate more sharply with urban voters.

It is noteworthy that major urban centers such as Hyderabad, Warangal and Khammam did not go to polls this time. Despite this, elections held in around 81 Assembly constituencies resulted in Congress victory in 68 constituencies, according to party leaders; This reflects widespread discontinuation of support across regions. A few months ago, Congress candidates and rebels together won 8,335 panchayats, or about 66%. The party continued its similar winning streak in urban local elections as well.
