Rubio, Zelenskyy meet in Munich ahead of trilateral talks with Russia in Geneva

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the Munich Security Conference on Saturday and said President Donald Trump “wants a solution that will end the bloodshed once and for all.”

In his X post, in which he shared a photo of himself shaking hands with the Ukrainian leader, Rubio wrote, “Met with Ukrainian President @ZelenskyyUa about Ukraine’s security and deepening defense and economic partnerships.” “President Trump wants a solution that will end the bloodshed once and for all.”

Earlier on Saturday, Zelenskyy revealed that he had spoken to Rubio as well as Trump envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner said he expected his government to be “really productive” ahead of trilateral talks in Geneva.

“I had a meeting with President Trump’s envoys @stevewitkoff and @JaredKushner ahead of the tripartite meetings in Geneva,” Zelenskyy wrote to X. “We are confident that the meetings will be truly productive.”

Zelenskyy said that they “discussed some developments following the meetings held in Abu Dhabi at the end of last month and the beginning of this month.”

“Not everything can be shared over the phone and our negotiating team will present Ukraine’s position next week,” the Ukrainian president said. he added.

Speaking to reporters after the Abu Dhabi talks, Zelenskyy said that the USA had set a deadline until June for Moscow and Kiev to sign a peace agreement.

According to the Associated Press, Zelenskyy said at the time: “The Americans are offering the parties to end the war at the beginning of this summer and will probably put pressure on the parties exactly according to this schedule.”

Zelenskyy added that if the June deadline is not met, the Trump administration will likely put pressure on Moscow and Kiev to meet.

On Saturday, he also thanked the United States for its “constructive approach” to ending the war.

“We greatly appreciate America’s continued constructive approach and readiness to help protect lives,” Zelenskyy said. he wrote. I thank President Trump, his team, and the American people for their support.

Rubio said Saturday he also discussed peace between Ukraine and Russia with his G7 counterparts at the Munich Security Conference.
