WA weather: Severe thunderstorms expected for Kimberley, Pilbara and North Interior, possible flash flooding
WA’s north faces a severe blow on Sunday afternoon; “Severe storms” are expected in parts of the Kimberley and Pilbara, creating the risk of flash flooding.
In a storm warning issued at 1.39pm on Sunday, DFES told residents in the towns of Telfer, Wallal Downs, Pardoo Roadhouse, Sandfire and Shay Gap to “take action immediately and stay safe” when the weather system hits the area.
Thunderstorms are “slow moving” and heavy rainfall is expected in the afternoon, which the Bureau of Meteorology says could lead to flash flooding.
According to BOM, severe weather is caused by a moist and unstable air mass circulating over the region.

WHAT SHOULD WE DO
- Pack, secure or tie down outdoor furniture, trampolines and other loose items around your home that could be picked up and thrown by strong winds.
- Prepare an emergency kit that includes a radio with dead batteries, a flashlight, spare batteries and a first aid kit.
- Review your plan and make sure everyone in your home knows what to do. If you don’t have a plan, make it now Emergency WA or Emergency WA app.
You may be isolated, so you need to:
- Carry enough canned food and water for five to seven days, as well as any medications or baby supplies you may need.
- Keep important documents such as identity and insurance documents safe.
- Fill your vehicle’s fuel tank.
There’s a big difference down south, where Perth is experiencing a cool relief from the summer heat this weekend and heading into next week.
Perth reached a maximum temperature of 26C in mostly sunny weather today, with temperatures expected to drop to 16C overnight.
Temperatures will remain in the mid to late 20s, rising to 35 degrees on Thursday, with very few clouds forecast: it will be sunny all week.
