A 20-year-old California mother was found guilty Wednesday in the death of her 1-year-old son, who reportedly left him in a sweltering car to get lip and butt injections last June.
Maya Hernandez took a plea deal in the child endangerment case, ultimately dropping the first-degree murder charge in exchange for involuntary manslaughter.
On June 29, Bakersfield officers arrested and charged Hernandez after finding two young children left unattended in a vehicle for more than two hours, according to a police report posted on the GoFundMe page. Authorities said the mother left her children unattended to get a cosmetic procedure at a nearby medical spa.
While the youngest was pronounced dead, his two-year-old son was in stable condition and was taken into protective custody, police said.

Officers noted that the temperature in Bakersfield at the time ranged from 99 to 101 degrees, suggesting the interior of the vehicle may have rapidly reached lethal levels.
According to a GoFundMe page organized by the father’s sister, the dead child was identified as Amillio Guierrez. The aunt also stated that the father was in prison at the time of the incident and that the surviving child was left without a parent at the time of the tragedy.
Hernandez was originally charged with second-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter, child cruelty and child endangerment. Court TV reported.
During the December hearing, prosecutor Stephanie Taconi criticized Hernandez for choosing her “look” over her children.
“It was wrong to put her vanity, her looks, and her desire to feel beautiful before her children,” Taconi said. “Not only was it wrong, it was criminal.”
The defense argued that Hernandez’s actions were not callously negligent, specifically emphasizing that he left the engine running to keep the air conditioning on. However, Hernandez, who was driving a Toyota Corolla Hybrid, was reportedly unaware of a safety feature designed to automatically shut off the engine after one hour.
The defense added that the mother left her children in their car seats with cookies and a bottle of milk. He also gave his older son his phone so he could watch videos.

Prosecutors further challenged the defense, characterizing Hernandez’s actions as a series of intentional choices. Although medical spa staff told her children were welcome, she reportedly refused to stay. Additionally, prosecutors said, Hernandez refused to ask relatives for help because he “didn’t want to bother” his sister.
Hernandez “chose to leave them in the car. He chose to take a break. He chose to take time for himself. He chose to socialize with other adults,” Taconi said. “And again this choice cost Amillio his life.”

Witnesses reported that Hernandez carried her “lame” and “purple” 1-year-old child to the medical spa, while another eyewitness stated that the 2-year-old “looked like he was going to have a stroke.”
The staff stated that Amillio was later taken to the hospital, where he was found “pale, his lips, feet and hands were blue, he was unconscious and had no pulse” and that the child’s fever was found to be dangerously high at 107.2 degrees.
