Washington: The United States deployed the world’s largest and most advanced aircraft carrier, USS Gerald R. Ford, to the Persian Gulf in order to intensify the pressure on Iran due to its nuclear program. The move comes as talks with Tehran continue. This indicates that the United States is prepared to use military force if negotiations fail.

Previous reports had suggested that USS George HW Bush might be sent, but Ford has now been selected for the mission. USS Abraham Lincoln and several other American ships are already stationed in the region. These deployments show the extent of the US military presence in the Middle East.

USS Gerald R. Ford, which entered service in May 2017, is the first of its class. It is designed to carry more than 75 aircraft, including stealth fighters such as the F-35. The carrier, which has a length of 337 meters and a full load displacement of 100,000 tons, is equipped with an electromagnetic aircraft launch system and advanced arresting equipment.

It can accommodate more than 4,500 personnel on board. The carrier, previously deployed to the Caribbean during operations linked to Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, is now expected to remain in the region until late April or May, with the extended deployment affecting crew rotations and maintenance schedules.

The move comes as part of a “maximum pressure” strategy that combines sanctions, military presence and strategic threats to push Iran towards a new nuclear deal. The United States sees Iran’s weapons-grade uranium enrichment as a serious threat.

Ford’s deployment is aimed at strengthening Washington’s negotiating position while reassuring allies such as Israel and Saudi Arabia. It effectively doubles America’s air strike capabilities in the Gulf.

Analysts say that the US presence in the region will be further strengthened if a second aircraft carrier, USS George HW Bush, is also sent. Military experts see the move as a sign that the United States is serious as the world calls for peaceful talks.

USS Gerald R. Ford joins an already tense environment in the Middle East defined by Israeli-Iranian conflicts, Houthi attacks and ongoing conflict in Gaza. By positioning its most powerful naval assets, the United States aims to pressure Iran to accept stricter terms than the previous nuclear deal.

At the same time, the deployment highlights the risks of escalation, as a failure in negotiations could spark a larger conflict in the region.
