Rain continues overnight, temperatures return to winter

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — Showers and storms continue overnight, followed by a return to winter temperatures.

Saturday was another hot and windy day before the showers and storms started. Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport recorded a new daily record of 86°, breaking the old record of 84° set in 2018.

Winds were gusting over 30 mph at times, even before the showers and storms arrived. Showers and a few storms that weakened in the afternoon moved into the Coastal Empire and Lowcountry. They lost their punch but still brought winds of 35-40 miles per hour in some areas.

A few more showers and perhaps a thunderstorm or two will move through the area Saturday night into Sunday morning before the cold front sets in. The last round of light showers will exit the area shortly after sunrise.

Skies are clearing and the rest of Sunday will be cool and windy at times. Winds from the northwest will gust over 30 mph at times. This, combined with drier air operating inside, will lead to a high fire hazard; Therefore, do not burn it outdoors on Sunday or Monday.

The return to winter weather lasts from Sunday night through Monday morning. Windy conditions continue and lows near freezing feel like the teens to 20s. So be sure to rally on Monday and highs only reach the 40s.

Winds will back off Monday night into Tuesday morning, resulting in even colder weather with lows in the 20s. This will likely bring a hard freeze to most areas along and west of I-95, so keep the Four P’s, including paying attention to early-blooming plants.

As temperatures gradually moderate throughout the week, a light freeze could be experienced Wednesday morning, followed by highs in the 60s and 70s. A storm system will be in effect in the region from Thursday to Friday, bringing showers.
