A brand new passenger rail service will start later this year, reducing travel time between Dubai and Abu Dhabi to just 50 minutes. Currently, the journey between both cities by car or bus takes about an hour and a half, depending on traffic. Etihad Rail, the UAE’s national rail network, currently focused on freight transport, is preparing to launch a fully integrated passenger service that will connect 11 cities across the country, including Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah and Fujairah.
The 560-mile new railway line will come into operation in phases, connecting major city centers to strategically located stations. Trains will operate at speeds of up to 125 miles per hour, and each of the 13 new trains will be able to carry up to 400 passengers.

The trains will feature safe and ergonomic seating, contemporary interior designs, full Wi-Fi coverage and individual power outlets at each seat.
The company said the services will operate on a precise and regular schedule, providing passengers with a reliable and efficient alternative.
Etihad Rail Chief Projects Officer Mohammed Alshehii confirmed that the passenger service will officially start in 2026. In the first phase, the network will connect 11 carefully selected cities and regions, including Mohammed Bin Zayed City in Abu Dhabi, Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai, University City in Sharjah and Al Hilal district in Fujairah.
He said: “Our trains are designed to offer a reliable, congestion-free alternative to intercity travel, with a focus on reducing journey times. 10 of the 13 trains in our fleet have arrived where they have been tested and certified to the highest international safety and quality standards.
“Each train will be able to carry up to 400 passengers and will be operated using the latest systems to ensure reliability and safety. Our services will be seamlessly integrated into the wider transport network, with stations connected to other modes of transport.”

Azza AlSuwaidi, Acting CEO of Etihad Rail Mobility, said: “Our preparations to launch passenger services across the national rail network in 2026 reflect the vision of our wise leadership to build an integrated transport ecosystem that supports the economic and social fabric of the UAE.”
“The passenger rail network will serve as the cornerstone of the UAE’s national transport ecosystem, supporting the country’s long-term development and strengthening connectivity across the Emirates. It will also build on our proven success in operating the national freight rail service since 2023.”
“This national milestone is the result of close collaboration between all partners and stakeholders, driven by outstanding national capabilities and supported by global best practices. In parallel, we have partnered with leading international operators, equipping the network with a next-generation fleet and advanced technologies to ensure the highest standards of quality, reliability and safety.”
He added: “Our trains will have a distinctly Emirati identity, strengthening national cohesion while serving as a long-term investment in the country’s transport and infrastructure sectors. These strategic projects will boost domestic tourism and set a new regional standard for sustainable, people-centred mobility, enhancing community well-being and improving quality of life.”
Although ticket details and the official launch date have not yet been announced, the project marks an important step towards increasing connectivity within the UAE. Beyond faster commutes, passenger rail is expected to encourage domestic tourism and reduce traffic congestion.
