This IIM wants to use AI to set question papers and check answers, even students can use it for projects

IIM-Nagpur director Bhimaraya Metri told Times of India that the institute is actively exploring AI tools to speed up assessments, prepare question papers and streamline academic processes. Currently, manual checking takes about two weeks, but with the introduction of artificial intelligence, the initial assessment can be completed within 24 to 48 hours.
But Metri has made it clear: AI will not replace professors. Instead, it will act as a powerful assistant. “AI cannot replace humans, but it cannot be ignored,” he said, adding that after the AI completes its initial screening, human examiners will continue to review the answer sheets to ensure nothing important has been missed.
The institute plans to move exams and applications online so that AI tools can analyze answers more effectively. These systems will scan answer codes, identify key points, and assign scores based on accuracy and depth. But the final say will still belong to human raters, especially in cases where responses go beyond standard patterns or demonstrate exceptional thinking.
Behind the scenes, IIM-Nagpur is holding internal meetings and considering licenses for proprietary AI platforms. A final decision on its launch is expected to be made soon.
The pressure of AI won’t end with grading. Students and faculty will soon have direct access to advanced AI tools for academic study and research. But there is a problem; Blind copying and pasting will not be tolerated. Faculty members will also use AI-powered detection tools to ensure authenticity and prevent abuse.
In fact, knowing how to use AI intelligently may soon become a skill for which students will be graded. Metri emphasized that asking for the right directions and using AI creatively could be part of future evaluation criteria. This move signals a major shift in management education, where AI will not just be a tool but a skill that every future business leader will be expected to master.
