Ex-WNBA star Kara Braxton dead at 43

In a statement made on Monday by the league, it was stated that Kara Braxton, a two-time WNBA champion and who played in the league for nearly a decade, passed away. He was 43 years old.

The WNBA released a statement regarding Braxton’s death.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of two-time WNBA Champion Kara Braxton,” the league said. “Kara, a 10-season veteran, played for the Detroit Shock, Tulsa Shock, Phoenix Mercury and New York Liberty. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and former teammates at this time.”

Detroit Shock selected Braxton with the 7th overall pick out of Georgia in the 2005 draft. He was an All-Star with Detroit in 2007 and was a member of the championship-winning teams in 2006 and 2008.

He was with the team when they moved to Tulsa but was later traded to the Phoenix Mercury and eventually the New York Liberty. He was waived by the Atlanta Dream prior to the 2016 season.

“We mourn the loss of former Liberty player Kara Braxton, whose presence and passion left a lasting impact on our organization and women’s soccer,” Liberty said. “Our hearts go out to his family, friends, teammates and everyone touched by his spirit. His impact will not be forgotten.”

Braxton averaged 7.6 points and 4.7 rebounds in 297 games in his career.
