A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “Officers arrested a 72-year-old man on suspicion of misconduct in public office.

“He was arrested at an address in Camden on Monday 23 February and taken to London police station for questioning.

“This follows search warrants at two addresses in the Wiltshire and Camden areas.”

Sir Keir Starmer has shown “ambivalence” about appointing Lord Peter Mandelson as US ambassador, a senior Conservative has said.

Shadow chancellor Sir Mel Stride said in an interview with Sky News that there was “a lot we need to know” about how the appointment was made.

“I think this … points to a lack of judgment on the part of the prime minister,” he said.

“Part of the process of getting to the bottom of exactly what happened now will be: What happened regarding his appointment, what information was known at what time and by whom, and were the right decisions made in that context, justified decisions?

“So there’s a lot we need to know.”

Virginia Giuffre’s family reacted to Lord Peter Mandelson’s arrest this evening, saying in a statement that it was a “meaningful act”.

His brother and sister-in-law, Sky and Amanda Roberts, said: “We commend the British authorities for taking meaningful action and treating the Epstein files with the urgency they demanded.”

The duo also touched on what they called “continued inaction in the United States,” saying it was “undeniable.”

“Survivors deserve transparency, prompt investigation and true justice, no matter who is involved in the crime,” they added.

Kemi Badenoch said Lord Peter Mandelson’s arrest was a “defining moment” for the prime minister.

The Conservative leader told Sky News: “I asked him a few months ago if he had full confidence in Peter Mandelson and he said yes, despite all these allegations being known. The sight of the man being arrested shows that the prime minister’s judgment is appalling.”

“He’s weak. He didn’t release the information around him.” [Mandelson] but he dismisses the person who was supposed to supervise his release.

“I think this shows what kind of person the prime minister is.”
