Apple shifts Mac mini production to US, deepens $600 billion investment amid Trump’s manufacturing push

Apple Inc.’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Tim Cook said on Tuesday (local time) that the Mac mini desktop computer will be manufactured in the United States later this year.

“As part of our $600 billion commitment, Mac mini will be manufactured in the US for the first time later this year!” Tim Cook wrote in a video posted on X. He added that the company is further accelerating progress as it produces more artificial intelligence (AI) servers, in addition to opening an all-new Apple Advanced Manufacturing Center for hands-on training.

“Apple is deeply committed to the future of American manufacturing, and we are proud to significantly expand our footprint in Houston with production of the Mac mini starting later this year. We have begun shipping advanced AI servers from Houston ahead of schedule and are excited to accelerate this work even further,” Cook added.

Apple’s expansion plan in Houston, Texas, is expected to create thousands of jobs and deepen the company’s $600 billion commitment by 2025.

This development comes as US President Donald Trump is aggressively pushing to bring factories and manufacturing back to the US. After taking office for a second term in January 2025, Trump called on US-based companies to accelerate plans to increase production in the country.

Apple’s American Production Program

Cook’s announcement is part of a commitment the company announced earlier last year and met with Trump in the Oval Office. According to the statement made by the company, after outlining this commitment, Apple said that it had exceeded many milestones within the American Manufacturing Program.

Exceeding its goal, Apple purchased more than 20 billion US-made chips from 24 factories in 12 states, including factories from partners such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC), Broadcom and Texas Instruments.

Additionally, GlobalWafers has begun production at its new $4 billion bare silicon wafer facility in Sherman, Texas. In line with Apple’s plans, the wafers produced here will be supplied to Apple’s US-based chip manufacturer partners, including TSMC and Texas Instruments.

The company expects to purchase over 100 million advanced chips produced at TSMC’s Arizona factory in 2026; This marks a significant increase compared to the previous year. The tech giant also launched the Apple Manufacturing Academy in Detroit, which provides hands-on training in artificial intelligence, automation and smart manufacturing to more than 130 small and medium-sized manufacturers in the country.

Apple doubles down on Houston

The tech giant said Mac mini’s new production line will double its footprint on its Houston campus. Apple began assembling advanced AI servers in Houston in 2025; The logic boards are manufactured on-site and the servers are distributed to the company’s data centers across the country.

In addition to expanding production, the technology giant is also devoting resources to developing the workforce behind US manufacturing. The new 20,000-square-foot Advanced Manufacturing Center is scheduled to open in Houston later this year and is currently under construction. The facility will offer hands-on training in advanced manufacturing methods to students, supplier personnel and businesses across the country. Led by Apple experts, the program will introduce participants to the same advanced techniques used in the company’s own manufacturing processes and help strengthen America’s manufacturing capabilities.

Long positioned as a compact but powerful desktop system, the Mac mini, along with the rest of the Mac portfolio, is traditionally manufactured in Asia, according to media reports. This change will make the Mac mini the second product to be offered for sale in the United States in the last few years, after the Mac Pro, which was produced for the domestic market in Texas.
