Kemi Badenoch skewers Rachel Reeves with brutal jibe at CV | Politics | News

Kemi Badenoch has taken a swipe at Rachel Reeves, highlighting claims the Chancellor exaggerated her CV during a brutal question-and-answer session in Parliament. Ms Reeves claimed she worked as an “economist” at the Bank, but Ms Badenoch highlighted claims the Chancellor had a more junior role.

The Conservative leader was asking Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer about rising unemployment levels among young people during PMQs in the House of Commons. Ms Badenoch said: “It’s not just about putting graduates in debt. Yesterday the Bank of England…” Pointing at the Chancellor, Ms Badenoch continued: “Yes, the Bank of England, where she works in customer service, said its policies were fueling youth unemployment.”

The Conservative leader said: “For the first time, youth unemployment is higher here than in the EU.”

She told Sir Keir: “And while he blames everyone, our young people can’t find work, lose hope and even leave the country.”

Although she claimed to be an economist, Ms. Reeves reportedly held positions such as “planning, customer relations officer” and “clients, mortgage officer.” This led to her being nicknamed “Rachel from Accounts”.

Huw Pill, chief economist at the Bank of England, warned this week that the impact of higher employer taxes and minimum wage increases was “particularly severe” on young people.

Unemployment across the UK has risen to 5.2% and Mr Pill told the House of Commons Treasury committee he was particularly concerned about unemployment among young people.

Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey told the same committee: “The youth unemployment rate is currently around 16 per cent. This is a high rate, it has increased faster than the general level.”
