Karnataka to proceed with 50% quota, internal reservation subject to court verdict: Minister Patil

The state government will continue recruitment under the existing 50 per cent reservation limit in view of the increased quota and stay on internal reservation while continuing the case before the court, Karnataka minister H K Patil said on Thursday.

The Cabinet on Thursday discussed the issue of internal reservation among Scheduled Castes and the impact of interim stay granted by the Karnataka High Court to an Act passed in 2022 to increase reservation from 50 per cent to 56 per cent, the legal and parliamentary affairs minister said.

According to Patil, the decision will pave the way for conducting a recruitment drive to fill more than 56,000 vacant posts in the state government.

“The Cabinet today held a detailed discussion on resuming the recruitment process in view of the increase in reservation percentage for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and challenges to internal reservation among Scheduled Castes before the Supreme Court,” he said.

The official added that the government will issue new recruitment notifications in accordance with the reservation scheme and cadre points in force before December 28, 2022.


“Taking this increase into account, we are now going back to 50 per cent. Depending on the outcome of the court order, we will add 2 per cent to SC reservation and 4 per cent to ST reservation,” Patil said. he said.
Explaining the state government’s stand, he said: “We are fighting for 56 per cent as the matter is in court. Depending on the outcome of this, if we get an opportunity to implement 56 per cent, then at that point 2 per cent more will go to SCs and 4 per cent to STs.”

Regarding whether domestic reservations will continue at the 50 percent limit, the Minister said, “Yes. We have no choice but to stay at the 50 percent limit right now.
