Vladimir Putin’s foreign ministry today condemned US-Israeli attacks on Iran and warned of the threat of “humanitarian, economic and possibly radiological disaster”.
Russia demanded an immediate return to a political and diplomatic solution to the situation surrounding its ally Tehran.
“The size and nature of the military-political and propaganda preparations before this reckless step, including the deployment of a large US military group to the region, leave no doubt that we are talking about a pre-planned and unprovoked act of armed aggression against a sovereign and independent member of the UN, in violation of the fundamental principles and norms of international law,” the foreign ministry in Moscow said in a statement.

“It is also reprehensible that the attacks are being carried out again under the guise of a restarted negotiation process aimed at ensuring the long-term normalization of the situation around the so-called Islamic Republic, and contrary to the signals conveyed to the Russian side that the Israelis are not interested in a military conflict with Iran.
“The international community, including the UN and IAEA leadership, must immediately make an objective and uncompromising assessment of these irresponsible actions aimed at destroying peace, stability and security in the Middle East.”
The Russians accused Washington and Tel Aviv of “embarking on a dangerous adventure that is rapidly bringing the region closer to a humanitarian, economic and possibly radiological disaster.”
“The attackers’ intentions are clear and they openly declare it: to destroy the constitutional order and eliminate the leadership of an undesirable state that refuses to submit to military dictatorship and hegemony.
“They bear full responsibility for the negative consequences of this man-made crisis, including the unpredictable chain reaction and spiral of violence.”
Putin’s government said the United States and Israel were “blatantly ignoring the serious consequences of these ill-considered steps for the global non-proliferation regime.”
They were “hiding behind alleged concerns that Iran would not have nuclear weapons.
“Bombing nuclear facilities under IAEA guarantee is unacceptable.
“In fact, Washington and Tel Aviv have goals that have nothing to do with the nuclear non-proliferation regime.
“It is impossible not to understand that by dragging the Middle East into a vortex of uncontrollable tension, they are actually encouraging countries in the region and around the world to take increasingly serious measures against emerging threats.
“We demand that the situation be immediately returned to a political and diplomatic solution.
“Russia, as before, is ready to assist in the search for peaceful solutions based on international law, mutual respect and balance of interests.”
