World reacts to killing of Iran’s supreme leader

While world leaders react to the death of Iran’s religious leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in US and Israeli attacks, a new wave of attacks is hitting the country.

RUSSIA PRESIDENT VLADIMIR PUTIN

“Please accept my deep condolences in connection with the murder of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Seyed Ali Khamenei, and members of his family, in cynical violation of all norms of human decency and international law.”

PRIME MINISTER OF PAKISTAN SHEHBAZ SHERIF

“Pakistan also expresses its concerns about the violation of international law norms. It is a very old convention that heads of state/government should not be targeted.”

PRESIDENT OF IRAN MASUD PEZEŞKİAN

“The martyrdom of the Supreme Leader by Israel and the criminal America was a great disaster for our country… America and Israel should know that this will bring them nothing but shame.”

POPE LEO XIV

“I wholeheartedly call on the relevant parties to assume the moral responsibility to stop the spiral of violence before it turns into an irreparable abyss. Stability and peace are built only by reasonable, real and responsible dialogue, not by mutual threats or weapons.”

EUROPEAN COMMISSION URSULA VON DER LEYEEN

“With Khamenei’s departure, there is new hope for the Iranian people. We must ensure that the future is in their hands and they shape it. At the same time, this moment carries a real risk of instability that could drag the region into a spiral of violence.”

ITALIAN FOREIGN MINISTER ANTONIO TAJANI

“Iran is currently in a transition phase, and it is not yet known how long this will last and what effects the war will have. What is certain is that a leader who has guided Iran for decades is gone, and this will have consequences, including the loss of Khamenei’s personal authority over the people.”

FRENCH GOVERNMENT SPOKESMAN MAUD BREGEON

“He was responsible for the deaths of thousands of civilians in his country and the region, so his disappearance can only be welcomed. It is now up to the Iranian people to choose their own destiny.”

KAJA KALLAS, CHIEF OF FOREIGN POLICY OF THE EUROPEAN UNION

“Ali Khamenei’s death is a defining moment in Iranian history. What will happen next is uncertain. But there is now a clear path to a different Iran, one whose people may have more freedom to shape.”

SWEDISH FOREIGN MINISTER MARIA STENERGARD

“Iran’s future should belong to the people. However, there is a long way to go on this path. The risk of a spiral of violence in the Middle East is still great.”

INDONESIA’S ULEMA MUSLIM RELIGIOUS COUNCIL

“The United States, which plays a central role in managing the Palestinian conflict through the BoP (Board of Peace), faces a big question: Does this strategy truly aim for a just peace, or does it actually destroy Palestinian independence by reinforcing an unequal security architecture?”
