Trump says US will ‘avenge’ fallen but more deaths likely | World | News

US President Donald Trump boasted about US-Israeli air strikes against Iran on the social media platform Truth Social.

Trump begins the video by saying that US forces have hit “hundreds of targets” in Iran, including Revolutionary Guard facilities, air defense systems and ships along the Gulf.

He said: “Last night all over Iran the voices of the Iranian people could be heard in the streets cheering and celebrating. [Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s] death was announced. The entire military command is also gone and many want to surrender to save their lives. They want immunity. “Thousands of people are calling.”

The US president added that he expected more soldiers to die during operations against Iran, but that “those who made the greatest sacrifice” would be avenged with “the heaviest blow to terrorists who are basically waging war against civilization.”

The Ministry of Defense (MoD) confirmed that Trump’s comments came after a British military base in Cyprus was targeted in a suspected drone strike.

The strike came after British Prime Minister Keir Starmer accused Iran of pursuing a “scorched earth strategy” and agreed to a US request to use British bases to protect both UK citizens and allies in the Middle East.

Sir Keir said British forces would not be directly involved in the attacks and that the bases would only be used for “specific and limited defensive purposes”, such as targeting missile storage depots and launchers used to attack Iran’s neighbours.

More than 200,000 British citizens, including military personnel, are thought to be at risk in the Gulf as Tehran’s regime launches more missiles at its neighbours.
