Three US Air Force F-15E Strike Eagles were shot down in a friendly fire incident in Kuwait late Sunday during active combat operations tied to Operation Epic Fury, US Central Command (CENTCOM) said.

The aircraft was mistakenly activated by Kuwaiti air defenses in a complex combat environment that included attacks by Iranian aircraft, ballistic missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles.

All six aircrew members were evacuated safely, quickly extricated, and reported to be in stable condition.

Kuwaiti authorities have acknowledged the incident and an investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the incident.

CENTOM said additional details are expected as the investigation progresses.
