With Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney arriving in Australia today, you will probably see how much we have in common: resource economies, allies, Commonwealth countries, middle powers, Westminster tradition democracies, federations, etc. What may be less noticeable is an important difference: Canada is part of North America, and we’re at the bottom of the Pacific. This is a distinction related to proximity to the USA rather than a geographical distinction.
What passes for Trump’s foreign policy is a chaotic mess that deliberately aims to destabilize and even destroy the norms and institutions on which the West has depended for 80 years.
