Washington will implement a series of measures aimed at stabilizing oil shipments through the Persian Gulf, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Wednesday, signaling the government is ready to step in as geopolitical tensions threaten one of the world’s most critical energy corridors.
“We have a number of announcements we’re going to make,” Bessent said on CNBC’s “Squawk Box.” “We started yesterday with DFC announcing that it would provide insurance for both crude oil carriers and cargo ships operating around the Gulf over the weekend.”
His comments come as markets are on edge following an escalating conflict with Iran that has raised fears of disrupting oil flows through the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway that handles roughly a fifth of global crude oil shipments.
