Who is Nishant Kumar? Meet Nitish Kumar’s software engineer son, who could be Bihar’s next CM

Who is Nishant Kumar? Family history and personal life
Born on July 20, 1975, Nishant Kumar is the only child of Nitish Kumar and Manju Sinha. His mother passed away in 2007.
He is currently unmarried and mostly stays in Patna. He makes occasional public appearances, often appearing alongside his father at certain events, but has never held an official position in the party or government.
Nishant Kumar’s Education
Unlike many political heirs, Nishant Kumar kept a low profile for most of his life. He completed his primary education at St Karen’s School in Patna and later studied at Manav Bharti International School in Mussoorie.
Mesra pursued higher education in software engineering at Birla Institute of Technology (BIT) in Ranchi. After completing his degree, he chose not to enter politics and largely stayed away from public life.
People who know the family describe him as spiritual and preferring a quiet lifestyle. Although he is the Prime Minister’s only son, he avoided active political roles for years.
Nitish Kumar’s move away from anti-dynastic politics
For decades, Nitish Kumar has built his political image around governance and distanced himself from family-based politics. Nishant’s entry marks a clear departure from this public attitude. Many JDU leaders say rising domestic demand has pushed the party leadership to reconsider its earlier hesitations. As Bihar’s political landscape becomes more competitive, the party believes it needs a face that offers continuity and builds emotional connect with its traditional support base.
Nishant’s name is said to have a memorable value among Kurmis and backward sections and Dalits who have sided with Nitish Kumar over the years.
Why is Nishant Kumar’s entry important now?
Nishant Kumar’s possible political exit comes at a crucial time for the JDU. Nitish Kumar turned 75 recently and talk about his future leadership has intensified in party circles.
Senior leaders believe that involving Nishant in active politics could help ensure organizational stability in the event of a leadership transition. Whether he will eventually emerge as a prime ministerial face remains unclear, but his candidacy alone has sparked controversy in Bihar’s political landscape.
