Brain dead man’s organs donated to five persons

Thanjavur: The organs of a brain-dead person were donated to 5 people here on Thursday.

Doctors at Thanjavur Medical College Hospital said Manikantan, a native of Thirucherai in Kumbakonam taluk, was hit by a train while walking on the railway track near his home on March 3.

He was taken to the Government hospital in Kumbakonam and first aid was given to him. He was later transferred to Thanjavur Medical College Hospital. Learning that brain death had occurred, doctors met with his relatives and asked them for organ donation.

They also agreed. Accordingly, Manikantan’s two kidneys, liver, corneas and skin of both eyes were removed. The kidneys were sent to Madurai, the liver to Tiruchy, the cornea to the Rajah Mirasudhar hospital here, and the skin to a private hospital.

Doctors said that 5 people benefited from organ donation.

Dean of Thanjavur Medical College, Dr. Poovathi and others paid their respects to Manikantan.
