The inquest into his death ruled that the official cause was drowning following a dingo attack.
A Queensland Coroner’s Court spokesman said Piper died “as a result of a dingo attack or asphyxiation in the setting of a number of resulting injuries”.
No further information could be provided as the investigation into Piper’s death is ongoing.
The state’s Department of Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation (DETSI) is warning about how to ensure dingo safety in K’gari.
“Dingos are pack hunters. They are the apex predators of the island’s ecosystem and should be treated with respect and safety in mind.”
“They should never be confused with pets and should not obey human commands.”
Piper’s father, Todd James, said he will cherish her memories of her “infectious smile and kind spirit.”
“Our hearts are shattered as we share the tragic loss of our beautiful daughter, Piper. I am in awe of her strength and determination to pursue her dreams.”
Her mother, Angela James, said in an interview with media in the Canadian province of British Columbia that her daughter was “having the ride of her life.”
Angela described her daughter as “adventurous.”
“He loved motocross. He loved camping, he loved swimming and he loved surfing. He wanted to learn to surf,” Angela said.
