THE NEW YORK TIMES: New wave of Israeli airstrikes battering Tehran

The Israeli military said it launched a “large-scale wave of attacks” on Iranian government infrastructure in the early hours of Saturday morning. Shortly afterwards, Iranian state media said Israeli strikes hit the area near Tehran’s Mehrabad Airport.

Two Tehran residents who live near the airport said in text messages that the airport was heavily damaged and that they could see what appeared to be burning commercial planes on the tarmac. The Israeli military did not immediately respond to questions about whether it had hit the airport.

The new wave of attacks in Tehran came hours after it was revealed that US officials believed Russia had provided intelligence to Iran during the US-Israeli war, including satellite images showing the locations of warships and military personnel. Russia’s intervention was the latest indication that the Middle East conflict was widening.

Russia’s information sharing could complicate relations between Washington and Moscow; However, some officials downplayed the significance of this, stating that Russia had been providing similar information to Iran for a long time and that it was unclear whether Tehran could take action on this issue.

Bombings in Iran and Lebanon continued unabated on Friday; oil and gas prices rose again; It was another sign of how the nearly week-long US-Israeli war against Iran is having economic consequences around the world.

President Donald Trump demanded Iran’s “unconditional surrender” in a social media post on Friday; It was the most uncompromising goal he had yet set for the war, and one that could herald a much longer conflict in the Middle East.

On Friday afternoon, Israeli officials said their forces had destroyed an underground bunker used by Iran’s supreme leader before he was killed last week.

The Israeli military also shelled the southern outskirts of Beirut and issued further evacuation warnings in Lebanon as it intensified attacks against Iranian-backed Hezbollah militants. The Norwegian Refugee Council estimates that around 300,000 people have fled their homes in Lebanon since the bombing began.

“We civilians are paying the price of war,” said 35-year-old Mohamed Hjoula, who took refuge on the coastline of Beirut with about 40 family members after leaving their homes.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard launched a wave of drones and missiles at Israel, the country’s state news agency IRNA reported. Air raid sirens sounded in Tel Aviv and the Israeli military said it had detected a missile launch from Iran, but there were no reports of major damage yet.

Meanwhile, the price of US domestic crude rose by almost US$10 per barrel in a single day, reaching close to US$91 on Friday, its highest price since 2023. The average price of unleaded gasoline in the United States has risen 11 percent since the start of the war to $3.32 per gallon. Simultaneous increases could be a serious shock to an already slowing world economy.
