Ukraine says Russia attack kills at least 10 in Kharkiv

Russia launched a drone and missile bombardment of Ukraine, damaging infrastructure and killing at least 10 people, including two children, in the northeastern city of Kharkiv, Ukrainian local officials said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said that Russia launched 480 drones and 29 missiles targeting the energy sector and railway infrastructure across the country.

“Partners need to react to these brutal attacks on life,” Zelenskiy said on Telegram.

Zelenskiy called on partners to continue the supply of air defense and weapons, saying, “Russia has not given up on its attempts to destroy Ukraine’s housing and critical infrastructure, and therefore support must continue.” he said.

Ukrainian air defense units shot down 453 drones and 19 missiles, the air force said.

However, it was stated that nine missiles and 26 attack aircraft hit 22 regions.

Kharkiv mayor Ihor Terekhov said that the city of Kharkiv was targeted by both Russian drones and missiles and that 10 people, including two children, were killed when a Russian ballistic missile hit a five-storey residential building.

Hanna, one of the residents of the collapsed building, told Reuters: “When we arrived here 20 minutes after the explosion, I thought I was going to have a stroke. I couldn’t put two words together and my legs were twisting.”

“It was good that I wasn’t there with my child and that my father was with me. The people living there were ordinary people. What were they aiming for?”

Russia’s defense ministry said its forces carried out major attacks overnight on military-industrial complexes, military airfields and energy facilities in Ukraine, Interfax news agency reported.

Regional officials said that 15 people were injured in Kharkiv and 19 houses were damaged due to Russian attacks.

It was stated that commercial and administrative buildings, electricity distribution lines and vehicles were also hit.

Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko said three people were injured and the heating system was disabled in 2,806 apartments in four districts of the capital after Russian attacks hit an energy infrastructure facility in Kiev.

National grid operator Ukrenergo said emergency power outages were initiated in seven regions following the Russian attacks.

Ukrainian officials said Russia also attacked four train stations and other rail infrastructure in central Ukraine and port infrastructure in the southern Odesa region, setting fire to containers containing vegetable oil and damaging a grain warehouse.
