Woman hospitalized after dog mauling in Mississippi

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A mother of three was taken to a Memphis hospital Sunday after family said she was mauled by a pack of dogs in Holly Springs, Mississippi.
The family claims they are now having trouble getting answers because they want someone to be held responsible.
WREG’s Katelyn Barker spoke with the victim’s loved ones, who said they also want justice for the mysterious attack.
The victim is in Regional One Health’s intensive care unit, his family said.
His family says they know for a fact that the victim was mauled by dogs, but the two black eyes he also had make them think there’s more to the story.
“He had to lie there for hours until anyone could help him,” said his aunt, Jerlene Tyson.

LaKesha Newsom, 35, was attacked by dogs while walking on Highway 178 in Holly Springs last Tuesday morning, according to family.
“He has bites under his arms. Both of his arms were cut very badly,” said Tyson. “He was attacked so badly in his rear end that they did multiple surgeries this week.”

Family members believe Newsom was attacked by dogs, but the real question now is who the dogs belong to and who will be held responsible. Questions that Holly Springs police refuse to answer.
Her aunt said, “They are hiding information. They said the dogs were confiscated.” “I am receiving information from other police officers that these dogs were not taken.”
WREG reached out to the Holly Springs Police Department regarding the incident. They confirmed there was a report but said it was not yet complete.
The family said that in addition to the dog bites, both of the victim’s eyes were black, which led them to question how this happened.
“We just want justice for LaKesha. She has children. We just want justice,” another relative said. “He didn’t deserve this. He’s human.”
Newsom has a long road to recovery. Given the extent of his injuries, he was at risk of losing multiple limbs, the family said.

“Overall, I want a thorough investigation. I want the truth. I want justice,” said his mother, Rosie Young. “It could be your daughter. It could be your mother, your sister, your aunt. This can happen to anyone, but generally what is hidden will come out.”
