Fatal shooting under investigation in Florida

Sheriff, St. Lucie County Sheriff’s officials are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred on March 9 west of U.S. 1, the sheriff’s office said.

Around 11 a.m., sheriff’s officials received a call about a shooting in the 800 block of North Lake Drive, Sheriff Richard Del Toro said.

Two men in their early 20s were on the lawn of a house. One died and the other was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, del Toro said.

Del Toro said both men were at another home and an argument broke out. One man pulled out a gun and fired, striking the other in the chest/shoulder area.

Del Toro said the victim ran into his home and was chased by the alleged gunman.

“A sort of wrestling match ensued in which the gun exchanged hands and then the suspect was fatally shot,” del Toro said.

He said the incident may have been a self-defense type of case, but the case was in the early stages of investigation.

Del Toro said some neighbors heard the gunshots and went outside.
