PM Modi speaks to Nepal leaders Rabi Lamichhane, Balendra Shah

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, March 9, 2026, met Nepal Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) leaders Rabi Lamichhane and Balendra Shah and congratulated them on their election victory and conveyed India’s determination to work with them for the mutual prosperity, progress and prosperity of the two countries.
In telephone conversations with the two leaders of Nepal, Mr. Modi said he was confident that with joint efforts, India-Nepal relations will reach new heights in the coming years.

“We had warm telephone conversations with Mr. Rabi Lamichhane, President of Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) and Mr. Balendra Shah, senior leader of RSP,” he said. X.
The Prime Minister said he congratulated both leaders on their election victory and RSP’s huge success in Nepal elections.
“I expressed my best wishes for the incoming new governments and India’s determination to work with them for the mutual prosperity, progress and prosperity of the two countries,” he said.
The House of Representatives (HoR) in Nepal has a total of 275 seats. 165 members are elected through First Past The Post (FPTP) or direct voting system, while 110 members are elected through proportional representation.
In the general elections held so far, the results of 161 of Nepal’s 165 seats were announced by direct voting. Results for the remaining four seats are expected to be announced soon.
In proportional voting, Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) got 40,49,604 votes, followed by NC 13,60,281, CPN-UML 11,50,679, NCP 5,91,940, Shram Sanskriti Party 2,91,965, Janata Samajwadi Party 1,16,463 and Rastriya Parivartan Party. 2,76,931.
With over 40 lakh votes under the proportional representation system, the RSP is expected to secure at least 40 more seats to reach around 164 seats in the 275-member House of Representatives, well above the 138 seats required for a simple majority, political observers said.
