Iran women’s soccer team granted asylum after Trump plea; NATO shoots down missile headed for Turkey; Ali Khamenei’s son Motjaba Khamenei named successor; ASX, global sharemarkets down
The coalition openly supported the Labor government’s recent decisions in the Middle East war.
At an afternoon press conference, Opposition Leader Angus Taylor welcomed the granting of visas to five players of the Iranian women’s football team and the deployment of medium-range missiles, 85 military personnel and a surveillance plane to the Gulf, at the request of the United Arab Emirates.
“Today we see allies fighting together against this despotic regime,” Taylor said.
Taylor said of the Iranian players: “These women are standing up to the regime with tremendous courage and I think that has captured the imagination of the Australian public. Every reasonable Australian would want a good outcome for their security and their future.”
Opposition defense spokesman Senator James Paterson added: “It is in Australia’s national interest to clear the waterways and airspace around the Gulf as soon as possible. If these can be cleared this will allow the flow of oil across the Gulf to resume and allow Australians to leave the Gulf and return home on commercial flights. This should help this happen more quickly.”
Earlier today the Greens opposed the military deployment, with party leader Larissa Waters saying “Australia has been completely dragged into another forever US war” which most Australians do not want.
