British tourist in Dubai arrested for ‘filming Iranian missiles’ | World | News

It was claimed that a British tourist who filmed Iran’s missiles advancing towards the country was arrested in Dubai. Campaign group Detained in Dubai said a 60-year-old man from London was understood to be on holiday in the Emirate when he was detained on Monday.

According to reports, the man has long been held at a police station in the Bur Dubai district of the Middle Eastern country, a popular British holiday destination. Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is famous for its sun-kissed, tax-free lifestyle. But after the United States and Israel launched airstrikes on the hardline Islamic Republic on February 28, the small country has come under near-constant missile and drone bombardment from Iran.

It is understood the British national has not yet been charged, but could face up to two years in prison or a hefty fine of up to £58,000 if convicted under Dubai’s strict cybercrime laws. Sharing images online of missile attack locations and countermeasures launched to thwart them could potentially lead to enemy forces being able to increase the accuracy of attacks.

Over the past 48 hours, UAE authorities have issued alerts to residents through the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority, which sends text alerts to mobile phones.

In advice shared with residents and travelers, the UAE said people should “prioritize safety over filming: Do not record video or post content on social media during warnings. Follow official instructions immediately.”

He also warned people to “refrain from spreading rumors” and “not share unverified information online.”

The Detained in Dubai campaign group, which provides worldwide support on UAE law, has confirmed it is assisting the British family being held in Dubai, Mail Online reports.

Chief executive Radha Stirling said: “Everyone has their phones and cameras out. People are being a bit careless.”

It is estimated that more than 200,000 British citizens thought to be in the Gulf at the start of the war have left the region since 1 March.

A second charter flight carrying British citizens back to their country departed from Dubai, the Foreign Office said.

The aircraft has been chartered to allow those who cannot find seats on commercial flights, and particularly vulnerable people, to more quickly access a safe route to the UK.

There was a flight fee. An increasing number of commercial flights have become available from the Gulf in recent days, with 32 of these landing in the UK on Monday.
