A woman threw herself out of a window and a gunman was shot to death during a hostage situation at a residence near an Orthodox Jewish synagogue in Baltimore.
Police responded to a burglary call at a home in the quiet Glen neighborhood, just yards from Baltimore’s Agudath Israel synagogue.
Police Commissioner Richard Worley said a woman was held at gunpoint by an armed man at a residence on Park Heights Boulevard just after 12:30 a.m. Tuesday.
During the tense confrontation, another woman jumped out of a window and the gunman opened fire on responding officers.
According to audio recordings obtained by Broadcastify, officers reported sniper fire from inside the house. WMAR. Police had to hide behind cars as the gunman opened fire on them, the outlet reported.
One officer was shot in the leg and was transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in stable condition. Another officer applied a tourniquet at the scene.
The gunman, who police said was related to the home’s residents, was killed by a responding SWAT officer.
Initial reports suggested that the gunshots were related to the synagogue.

Footage taken by a local resident showed officers from multiple law enforcement agencies descending on the scene, including officers carrying assault-style weapons.
Medical teams were also called to the scene, which was cordoned off by the police.
‘He was relatively quick because he was shooting at our officers,’ said Commissioner Worley. The gunman.
“We are very thankful that neither the officer nor anyone else in that neighborhood was seriously harmed,” added Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott.
‘Our thoughts are with him and his family, including the family of the deceased.’
Agudath Israel of Baltimore synagogue hosts daily services, including mincha, or afternoon prayer, at 12:30 p.m.
It’s unclear whether Tuesday’s mincha was still going on or how many people attended when gunshots were heard.
About a dozen students at the Baltimore synagogue Kedushas Yisroel Khal Chassidim monitored the situation during their lunch break, according to local media reports.

Authorities urged people to stay away from the 6200 block of Park Heights Boulevard while they investigated the shooting.

One resident told the Baltimore Banner that ‘this kind of thing isn’t very common in this area.’
The Baltimore City Fraternal Order of Police said in a post on X that “all members involved” in the shooting were “in good spirits.”
Maryland Governor Wes Moore also posted his thoughts and prayers for everyone involved.
“We have been in close contact with the Baltimore Police Department and I have offered them any government support they may need,” he wrote to X.
‘I am grateful for the work done by our brave law enforcement officers and medical professionals to keep our communities safe.’
