‘Sly stowaway’ UK fox finds new home at Bronx Zoo after illicit transatlantic trip | Southampton

A sly fox boarded a cargo ship and traveled from Southampton to New York, according to Bronx Zoo officials.

The zoo, which took care of the animal, said that the animal appeared healthy after initial examinations.

It’s unclear how the male red fox got on the car-carrying ship to make the 3,400-mile journey to the east coast of the United States.

She departed Southampton, Hampshire, on 4 February, and the ship docked in New York Harbor and New Jersey on 18 February.

Diane J Sabatino, deputy commissioner of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection Department, wrote in

Authorities brought the fox to the zoo the next day. It is estimated that he is two years old and weighs 5 kg (11 lbs).

Keith Lovett, the zoo’s animal programs manager, said: “He seems to be settling in nicely. He’s been through a lot.”

After passing additional health checks, the mammal will be found a long-term home.

The omnivore has a diet consisting of produce, proteins and some biscuit-like items at the zoo’s veterinary center.

Officially called Vulpes vulpes, the species is common in Europe, Asia, North America and parts of Africa.
