Iran’s new supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei releases first statement, vows to keep blocking Strait of Hormuz; Oil prices could reach record highs
Israeli warplanes destroyed a city building in Beirut, an hour after warning residents to stay away from the area, in another show of military force over the civilian population in Lebanon’s capital. We continue to see and hear about these air strikes in settlements outside the evacuation zones that Israel determined in the past. Israel targets new areas every day.
Our photographer, Kate Geraghty, was in the area before the missiles hit. There was no doubt about where the attack would come, because the Israel Defense Forces not only named the Bachoura area near the city center, but also issued instructions indicating the street and building to be demolished.
Within an hour, Beirut residents could hear jets flying over their city. Then the missiles destroyed the building. Geraghty saw workers from nearby buildings come out into the street to see the airstrike, knowing it was coming. Emergency first responders arrived on scene to assist residents caught in this battle.
At one point, he saw an emergency worker embrace an elderly man on the street, leaning over and kissing his head. It was a poignant display of the shared pain in this community.
