Meghan Markle was savagely attacked by a group of royal commentators during her final appearance, scheduled for next month in Australia. The Duchess of Sussex will be the star attraction at a women-only event in Sydney during a series of engagements Down Under.

Meghan will be interviewed on stage at the £1,440-per-person event during her trip with the Duke of Sussex in April. VIP tickets for the 300-person event, which runs from 17-19 April, cost AU$3,199 (£1,700) and offer front-row seats at the gala dinner and a group photo with Meghan.

But some royal commentators called her appearance “Comic-Con” and said Meghan being described as “just like Fergie” was a “minor blow”.

Daily Mail‘s royal editor Rebecca English said on the Palace Confidential podcast: “When they left the Royal Family they were doing hundreds of million pound deals and now it’s the equivalent of £1,700 to take a group photo with them.

“Now they’re basically kind of doing meet-and-greet pay-per-view and photo events.”

The publication’s daily editor, Richard Eden, later added: “It kind of conjures up images of fan conventions for me.”

To which host Jo Elvin said: “Yeah, I was going to say Comic-Con. That’s what it sounds like.”

Meanwhile, Ms English told how a royal source claimed Meghan had basically turned into Sarah Ferguson, to which Mr Eden shouted: “Oh, that’s a low blow.”

The publication’s royal editor later added: “I hadn’t thought of it that way, but when they said it, I said, ‘God, you know, you’re right, because that’s what she did when she divorced Prince Andrew and stopped working as a royal.'”

Meghan’s attendance was announced by Her Best Life podcast host Gemma O’Neill, who organized the event.

She said: “I’m in awe of this woman (Meghan) and the things she’s endured and how she’s overcome it and shown how a woman can be pushed down and still rise.”

O’Neill described the three-day event, held at a beachside hotel, as a “perfect girls’ weekend” and said Meghan contacted him after being contacted by a mutual friend.

“I’m flattered that he actually did this as a favor, thanks to our mutual friend,” he said.

“She does this because she truly loves what our community is about, women trying to grow, trying to do their best, and trying to help other women.”
