local ace wins Women’s Aussie Open
“And I’m so lucky that today is that day.”
Porter’s stunning success and Parisian Laisne’s five-under-67 attack left Green unnerved.
The West Australian joins the legendary Karrie Webb, Jane Crafter and Jan Stephenson as local Open winners.
Five-time champion Webb’s 2014 title was the last title for the locals until Green’s emotional victory.
“This is amazing,” he said.
“I’m truly honored to have my name on this trophy alongside so many great players.”
Australia’s Karis Davidson (under six) finished fourth as her famous compatriots and big winners Minjee Lee and Grace Kim battled it out.
World No.4 Lee signed on to finish three-under with a 71-under par, while Kim belatedly improved with a five-under 67 on Sunday to finish three-under.
After Porter signed the course record, Laisne emerged as Green’s chief rival.
Playing ahead of the local player in the group, Green and Laisne trailed by 11 points for most of the back nine.
The Parisian was in danger of falling behind on the par-3 15th hole, but managed to save the par-3 by passing through a dangerous greenside position.
The green made a break on the par-5 16th, drilling a 15-foot downhill putt for birdie to create a one-shot buffer.
But then he holed his tee shot into a big fairway bunker on the 17th.
In an awkward stance, he had some good luck when his shot from the sand hit a large bush on the bunker side and veered into the fairway.
Up ahead on the 17th green — with Green sitting on his golf bag looking in the opposite direction — Laisne left a 25-foot par putt short and could only make bogey.
Green was also unable to hold par and had another tense moment on 18: his shot bounced to the right, but in what he called a “member bounce” the ball deflected off a mound into the fairway.
After Laisne hit a long par putt, 29-year-old Green also made par for a coveted victory.
