TikTok and Meta risked safety to win algorithm arms race, whistleblowers say

Senior Meta researcher Matt Motyl said Instagram Reels, the company’s rival to TikTok, was launched in 2020 without adequate security measures. Internal research shared with the BBC showed that comments on Reels had a significantly higher prevalence of bullying and harassment, hate speech, violence or incitement than elsewhere on Instagram.
