Jharkhand Mukti Morcha To Contest Assam Assembly Polls, To Field Candidates in 31 Seats

Guwahati: In a major political development, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, led by Hemant Soren, on Monday announced that it has decided to field its candidates to 31 seats in the upcoming assembly elections in Assam.

Confirming that the party’s central committee has taken this decision, JMM said in a statement, “Jharkhand Mukti Morcha has decided to contest 31 seats in the upcoming Assam legislative assembly elections. This decision was taken after detailed discussions held in the central committee meeting of senior leaders of the party.”

The presence of a large community of tea workers in Assam is significant; The majority of them are Adivasi who migrated to the state from Jharkhand’s Chhotanagpur district during the British period.

According to the statement, JMM believes that Assam has a large concentration of tribal people and people originally from Jharkhand whose social and economic aspirations need strong representation. “Jharkhand Mukti Morcha will give strength to these voices and will contest elections with the aim of protecting their rights,” the statement said.

JMM president Hemant Soren visited Assam recently and during this time he met leaders of two opposition parties separately.

Stating that JMM is trying to establish a tactical alliance with local political parties, the party announced that it will soon announce the list of candidates for the ballot box, where the voting will be held on April 9. The deadline for applying for candidacy has been set as March 23; Therefore, the candidate list is expected to be announced within a week. “Jharkhand Mukti Morcha believes that the people of Assam will support the policies of development, respect and rights,” the statement said.
